Guy Lukatch is a Tel Aviv based double bassist. Greatly influenced by the legendary bassist and composer Scott LaFaro, his playing style is melodic and rhythmically intricate, while retaining the ability to perform the bassist’s traditional part in an ensemble. He is also influenced by the contemporary jazz scene in Tel Aviv and admires bassists such as Barak Mori and Alon Near.
Wishing to be a drummer at around 10 years-old, his father insisted he begin by learning a harmonic instrument, sending him to piano lessons which would reveal his natural ability in learn music by ear – his teacher often described him as the most promising student he has ever had, and enjoyed having a student who was excited to learn Jazz. Over the following years, while simultaneously taking piano lessons, he began learning drums and guitar. As a teen, Guy began focusing on guitar and later bass guitar, and eventually began playing double bass at 18 and immediately fell deeply in love with the instrument.
Guys is currently working towards his B.F.A in Jazz Performance from the Tel Aviv Conservatory’s Center for Jazz studies, an affiliate program of The New School University in NYC, and is fully dedicated to the double bass, working on his own compositions, and learning as much as possible from the great teachers of the conservatory.
